Toy Design

In this final assignment, we needed to design a toy by using the same design process. First, we were each assigned to body parts and we must design a toy that react to those body parts. For me, I was assigned to hand and wrist.

Empathy

I did my research in empathy, these include stages of play and the act of play involved, why we play, toy and object of play, materials I might need for my toy, and finally the movements of wrist and hand (my assigned body part).
When doing this, I combined information from my research and personalized examples from my childhood. By making things more relatable to me, it could enhance my understanding and provide more ideas.

Define

With empathy completed, time to procced into define.
We needed to justify the aim, narratives, understanding of the materials, and state initial design ideas of the toy based on the assigned body part and its movements and the materials.
To be frank, this was a struggle for me because I went for creative play but did not set a perimeter on how users should express their creativity. Consequently, I had no direction to develop my ideas.
Fortunately, with guidance from Mr. Paul, I managed to set a clearer aim for the toy and developed more ideas from there.

Ideation

From the analysis gathered in define, I derived 3 main ideas for my toy in ideation. These were: shadow puppet show, surgery, and chaos baking.
For each ideation, I weighted the strengths and constraints to help me choose an ideation for the prototype.

Prototype

So I've chosen the shadow puppet toy ideation, named as ' Phantom Puppeteer'.
This prototype was divided into 3 main stages: prototype for testing, the prototype for elements, and prototype for the box.

Prototype

Testing

I tested my idea to better understand the possible concerns like overlapping shadows.

Elements Making

Here I made the elements that I've mentioned in ideation for the toy. However, I changed and added some elements due to certain difficulties faced.

Box Making

Now I made the box for the toy where the elements will be inserted into.

Finally, 'Phantom Puppeteer' was ready to display.

Present

For the presentation, we made a promotional poster and video demonstration of our toy.

The graphics reflected the shadow and dreamy concept of the toy.

When I started this assignment, I had literally no ideas for my toy. Until I asked Mr.Paul, then only I realized I did not develop my points from empathy into define and there was no clear perimeter set as the purpose of my toy.
From this, I understood the reasons we faced stagnance in the design process and how to address them.

This assignment also gave me the chance to explore various software like Canvas, photoshop, and viva video editor.
These were all alien to me and it can be frustrating to figure out their function. Nevertheless, I used them successfully to achieve the desired outcome of my assignment.

This was another exceptional assignment that challenged my critical wits. Many problems were laid ahead like creating a practical design, failed designs of elements, errors in video editing, messy poster designs, and so on.
These challenged my critical thinking skills to solve them.
