Inside Out - Head - Space Cube
The Full Story
The last 2 assignments exposed us to design elements and principles of spatial design, in this assignment we now have to design with a clear intention, as we have to design a headspace for our clients- emotion characters from the movie Inside Out.Â
Scale and proportions and the understanding of anthropometrics and ergonomics had to be applied too.
For this assignment, I needed to design a headspace for my client Joy .

Take a Look
Analyzing character
We started off by watching the movie Inside Out and I paid attention to the traits of my client named Joy. Then I analyzed her character from the movie and included my own interpretation of Joy herself.

Space Planning - Bubble diagram
An interesting finding of mine is I realized Joy and Sadness coexist with one another, in which one needs to go through sadness sometimes in order to find Joy, I decided to make this my concept for my headspace.
So I planed my spaces through a bubble diagram, there were 4 main spaces: Joy, Resilience, Sadness, and Reflection. In which Joy must undergo the journey of being happy and resilient, to being sad when things go wrong, and then reflecting from there on, realizing whats need to be fixed, which would then lead her back to joy.Â
Then I sketch the designs for each space before designing the whole headspace.
I found out the spaces relate in a cycle
After many sketches, I finalize the sketch for mock 1

Finalizing Concept and planning mock 1
As I was planning I realized the spaces related to each other like a cycle, hence this gave me the concept of Merry - Go _ Round, which is a cycle of growth and adventures.Â
Then I planned to merge all 4 spaces, eventually, I produced the sketch for mock 1.
Mock 1
I made the 30 x 30 x 30 cm mock model, but there were many things to improve on like there were a lack of connectivity, lack of exaggeration and etc.
Mock 2 Planning
Then I move on to sketch and plan mock 2 while making amendments from mock 1. This time I arranged the cubes in a more playful manner.
Mock 2
I made the 2nd mock model. However, there were still some issues, the cubes should be rotated horizontally because the composition was too messy. There was also a need for more connectivity among the spaces.
Final Sketch Planning
From mock 2, I developed the final sketches for my model.
Present
Once my sketches were finalized, I went to make my final 30 x 30 x30 cm headspace model using modeling board. I also composed my presentation board and filmed my presentation video.
