Design Elements

This assignment aimed to introduce students to the basic conceptual elements of a spatial design, which was to understand it all starts with a point, that moves into a line, then forms a plane, and hence forms volume from there.

We also learned to apply design language and arrange spaces in a competent manner, whilst learning volumetric thinking.
Thus, we were required to make a minimum of 2 mock-up models of spatial design as a development to produce one final model.

PART 1 – POINTS & LINES (2-DIMENSIONAL )

We 1st selected 6 images of interior spaces in a building, then identify points on the images and connect all of them with lines. This taught us that all volumetric designs begin with basic points and lines.

PART 2 : PLANES, VOIDS & VOLUME (3-D)

Next, one image from the 6 was chosen to be developed. I placed sticks on the dots on the picture as if the points move into lines, then I studied the frame of the model before adding planes. For this, I  establish a dynamic frame and placed planes on it. Hence, my mock model was formed.

PART 2 : PLANES, VOIDS & VOLUME (3-D)

From mock 1, I concluded my model was too messy. So in the development of the 2nd mock model, I tried to redesign the frame and established its dynamic movement to a single direction.

PART 2 : PLANES, VOIDS & VOLUME (3-D)

From mock 2, there were many issues with insufficient planes and horizontal planes explorations. Also, some planes and sticks were not placed properly. So I went on to address those issues as a development to finalize my final model design.

FINAL

Once I was satisfied with the amendments, I made the final model with a proper white modeling board.

There were many issues I encountered in this assignment, so I needed to think critically for effective solutions.

Although I was quite confused by these new things. However, looking back, I now understood they were the foundation to teach us about spatial design and their basic elements.

Like other modules in FNBE, I needed to take my own initiative to learn more by referring to others' works and evaluating my own work to look for areas to improve. Of course, this included approaching my tutor with the right questions.
